About

Ghemme is the lesser-known cousin of Barolo and Barbaresco — northern Piemonte, more elegant and structured at less cost. Nebbiolo at its most refined.

The ground at Ghemme is nothing like the Langhe. It carries volcanic rock thrown out by the ancient Valsesia caldera, mixed with stone the Sesia river brought down from Monte Rosa. The vines sit between 280 and 310 metres on that debris. Volcanic soil is why Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo reads fresher and more mineral than its southern cousins, and why the tannin arrives finer.

The Arlunno family have held this land for more than five centuries. Anno Primo was their first estate bottling, made in 1974, and it is still the wine they are known for. It ferments with the cap held under, then takes twenty months in oak before more time in bottle.

Decant it and give it an hour. Beef or game.
