Podere Frontino grows its Montepulciano at Bucchianico, in the hills of Chieti province in Abruzzo. The estate is small, six hectares of vines at 280 metres on calcareous clay. Warm days and cool nights at that height let the grapes ripen without losing their freshness.
The estate also makes a Riserva, aged more than two years under DOC rules. This standard bottling takes the opposite path. It goes to bottle young so the fruit arrives with nothing in its way.
Treat it as the house red for a week of dinners. It suits sausages off the grill, a midweek bolognese or pizza straight from the box. No decanter, no cellar, just a glass.
