Medium-weight, savoury, food-friendly. The Yarra version of a Bordeaux blend.
Warramate was planted in 1970 at the foot of the Warramate Hills, on grey clay loam threaded with gravel. Yarra Yering farms next door, and the same team makes both. The Cabernet comes from the original 1970 vines plus a 2000 expansion. The Malbec is a newer planting, added because of the energy the grape brings to their other Cabernet blends.
The 2021 runs 60 per cent Cabernet, 25 Merlot, 15 Malbec. All of it was hand-picked into small 600-kilo fermenters and plunged by hand twice a day. The Merlot and Malbec fermented as whole berries for plushness, then the blend spent 15 months in small French oak barrels.
Open it now with lamb or steak, or hold it up to five years.
