About
Italian Nebbiolo grown in Victoria's King Valley — a region quietly producing some of Australia's most convincing examples of the variety. Rose, tar, red cherry, fine grippy tannin. The new wave of Aussie-Italian winemaking.
Dave Fletcher is an Australian who moved his family to Barbaresco, in Piedmont, to make Nebbiolo at the source. He works there as a winemaker at Ceretto, and he comes home each vintage to make an Australian expression of the grape.
The Minion is that homecoming wine. The approach is bare-bones: wild fermentation, ageing in seasoned oak, no fining and no filtration. Parcels are fermented separately, then blended for balance before bottling.
Nebbiolo rewards a little patience at the table. Open it half an hour early and put it next to beef, a mushroom risotto or a hard aged cheese. The tannin that feels stern on its own turns friendly with food.
Producer note
Fletcher is a young-gun King Valley producer focused on Italian varieties.
