Komasa Jyozo has distilled in Kagoshima, at Japan's southern tip, since 1883. The house spent its first century as a shōchū maker and only turned to gin in 2018. That heritage shapes the spirit, because the base here is rice shōchū rather than neutral grain.
The mandarin is not a generic one. It is the Sakurajima komikan, the world's smallest mandarin variety, grown in the volcanic soils on the slopes of the Sakurajima volcano. Its peel carries the distillation, with juniper and coriander in support.
Drink it where citrus can shine. A gin and tonic with no garnish needed, or a martini when you want perfume over punch.
