Ashmore Vineyard sits where Marlborough's Wairau Valley meets the Southern Valleys, on free-draining silt loam over a clay base. North-facing rows catch sun all day, and the valley keeps its nights cool even at the height of summer.
The vineyard was planted in 1997. It has been farmed organically since 2009, with certification following in 2012, and stays that way today.
Expect peach blossom and orange peel on the nose, with lime and honeysuckle carrying through the finish. It comes in at 12.5 percent and sees no oak, so what you taste is the site rather than the winery. Pour it alongside something with a little chilli heat.
