About

Angus Vinden makes some of the Hunter's most exciting wines. This Chenin is layered and built to age — far from the casual style most people expect from the grape.

The Chenin block at Somerset Vineyard was planted in 2007 on fine clay loam. It sits within a Pokolbin site with vines dating back to the 1890s. Maurice O'Shea once took fruit from here for Mount Pleasant, and later blocks fed Len Evans' Rothbury Estate wines. Angus Vinden bought the property in 2020 and farms it organically now.

Fruit is hand picked and pressed whole bunch, then goes straight into large-format French oak for barrel fermentation. Eleven months follow on lees, with bâtonnage stirred through to build a creamy texture around the fruit and the oak's spice. Sulfite additions stay minimal throughout.

Pour it a touch warmer than your other whites, closer to 12 degrees, so the oak and texture come through. It has the structure to hold in a cellar for years, but there's no reason to wait for a rich dinner tonight.

Producer note

Vinden Wines is a small Hunter Valley producer focused on lower-intervention winemaking.
