About
From the cooler Southern Valleys (not the famous Wairau plain). Old-vine fruit gives this Chardonnay shape, savoury character and length — far from the simple style most people associate with NZ Chard.
Auntsfield sits on the oldest vineyard site in New Zealand's South Island. Scottish settler David Herd planted vines on this Ōmaka Valley hillside in 1873, then built Marlborough's first commercial wine cellar in 1892.
The Chardonnay grows on soils that mix greywacke rock with old, low-fertility clay. That ground gives the estate's whites their texture and mineral line.
This is a white for the table rather than the deck. Pour it with seafood or roast chicken, and take it out of the fridge early. It shows more of itself as it warms in the glass.
