About

The Southern Highlands is one of NSW's high-altitude cool-climate regions — and underrated for Pinot. Cherry, red fruit, fine tannin. NSW Pinot worth knowing about.

Brothers Anton and Mark Balog planted Artemis at Mittagong in 1996, putting in the first Pinot Noir vines the Southern Highlands had seen. The district now knows them as its Pinot pioneers.

The vineyard is closing in on its thirtieth harvest. The Balogs work from European winemaking traditions and match them to Australian fruit. Their cellar door at Mittagong is built from recycled river redgum.

Drink it over the next few years with duck, roast chicken or anything involving mushrooms. In summer, ten minutes in the fridge before pouring will not hurt it.
