About
Alto Adige altitude gives this real mineral cut — the benchmark style of Italian Pinot Grigio, nothing like the supermarket version. Worth the step up.
Colterenzio is a growers' cooperative in Cornaiano, in the hills above Bolzano. Twenty-six winegrowers founded it in 1960 so they could bottle their own wine rather than sell grapes to merchants. Around 300 member families now farm 300 hectares of Alpine vineyard, at heights from 230 to 650 metres.
The members pick every bunch by hand, and the winery runs largely on solar power. Pinot Grigio here comes from gravelly, calcium-rich sites that suit the grape.
Drink it cold and young. Pear and apple fruit sits on a dry, stony finish, light in body without being thin. It handles seafood, salads and soft cheese without fuss, and it costs less than its quality suggests.
