About
A genuinely different take on Australian Shiraz — Tasmanian climate gives it lift, freshness and pepper.
Freycinet Vineyard planted the first commercial vines on Tasmania's East Coast in 1979. Geoff and Susan Bull founded it near Bicheno, beside the peninsula the winery is named for, and the family owns it still. Every bottle is grown, made and bottled on the estate.
Shiraz is a recent chapter here. It joined the range after the family bought the neighbouring Coombend vineyard in 2013. The vines grow on the sloping sides of a small valley, where aspect, slope and soil combine to ripen red grapes fully this far south.
This 2017 comes with bottle age already, a rare thing to find on a shelf. Open it tonight with steak, roast chicken or game. Give it 30 minutes in a decanter and serve it just below room temperature.
