About
Gareth Belton's lower-intervention Sangiovese from the Adelaide Hills. Bright cherry, fresh herbs, fine tannin, savoury edge. Cool climate gives this lift and freshness — closer to Tuscan precision than Aussie weight.
Gareth and Rainbo Belton were seaweed scientists before they were winemakers. They farm like it, organically and with patience. Gareth calls Sangiovese his favourite grape to work with.
The fruit comes from vines at Charleston and Forreston, 16 to 27 years old. They sit on sandy loam over siltstone and sandstone, at up to 460 metres. Everything is destemmed, then the wine sits six weeks on skins, three fermenting and three macerating afterwards. That long soak is what softens the tannin. It then rests eight months in a mix of hogsheads, terracotta and foudre, with sulphur added only at bottling.
Lunch is its moment. Pizza, roast chicken, a table of people and a slight chill on the bottle. Gareth's own line is that it is as good as lunch wine gets.
Producer note
Gentle Folk is one of the Adelaide Hills' most respected lower-intervention producers.
