About
Cherry, red fruit, mineral cut. Serious cool-climate intent.
Brothers Jonathan and Matthew Hughes farm Mewstone, a small vineyard at Flowerpot on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel south of Hobart. Hughes & Hughes is their second label, drawing fruit from growers across Tasmania. Jonathan makes the wines, after stints in Central Otago, the Mornington Peninsula and Barolo.
The 2024 is built for energy rather than weight. Most of the fruit went in as whole berries, with 15 percent whole bunches including a carbonic portion. Wild yeasts ran the ferment, and the wine sat on skins for up to three weeks.
Drink it with duck or a mushroom risotto tonight, or give it a few years in the rack. It has the acid line to repay patience.
