About

Il Paradiso di Frassina is the Tuscan estate famous for piping classical music — particularly Mozart — through speakers in the vineyard, based on the theory that the music encourages vine growth and discourages pests. Beyond the curiosity, the Brunello itself is serious: Sangiovese Grosso aged five years before release, concentrated cherry, leather, tobacco, earth, with structure to age another decade.

The estate itself is older than the music. Il Paradiso di Frassina is a medieval farm dating from the 11th century, five kilometres north of Montalcino at the foot of the Montosoli hill. Giancarlo Cignozzi, a lawyer with a lifelong love of music, revived it and planted the idea that became its trademark.

The experiment drew serious backers. In 2005 Bose founder Amar Bose donated around 80 weatherproof speakers and funded research at the universities of Florence and Pisa. Today about a hundred speakers play through the organically farmed rows.

Treat the bottle like any top Brunello. Decant it an hour ahead and serve it with beef, game or a hard aged cheese. Or lay it down and let it grow.

Producer note

Il Paradiso di Frassina is in Montalcino. The 'Mozart in the vineyard' approach has been the subject of agricultural research — and it makes a memorable story for the dinner table.
