About
Single-vineyard Montepulciano from Natalino Crognaletti — older release, fully into its secondary phase. Dark cherry, plum, leather, earth, long structured tannin. Marche Montepulciano at premium tier, built for big roasts and aged cheese.
'Solleone' is the Italian name for the fierce midsummer sun, and it is also the name of the vineyard. The plot caps a hill at 350 metres near Montecarotto and catches sun all day. The Montepulciano vines here average more than 50 years old.
Crognaletti makes it slowly. The grapes ferment on natural yeasts in wooden vats through a very long maceration. The wine then ages for years in oak and concrete, and rests again in bottle before it leaves the farm. That patience is why an older vintage arrives here ready rather than raw.
Decant it an hour ahead and give it a big plate. Slow-roasted lamb, braised game or a hard aged cheese will meet it halfway.
