About
Gisborne is NZ's best region for Viognier. Generous fruit, peachy character, a touch of honey — soft and accessible without going flabby.
This is Millton's Riverpoint Viognier, grown at Manutuke on the Gisborne flats. The vines went in back in 1997, among the first Viognier planted anywhere in New Zealand. They sit on young sedimentary river soils close to the Pacific, where sea breezes slow the ripening.
Millton farms biodynamically and dry-grows the vines, with no herbicides, insecticides or soluble fertilisers. The wine ferments in a mix of barrels and stainless steel, so the oak reads as texture rather than flavour.
With a few years in bottle it has moved past simple fruit. Expect poached pear and warm croissant, with a saline edge off the sea air. At 14 per cent it has real presence, so pour it with food. Roast chicken and pork both work.
