About
Tumbarumba sits at high elevation in southern NSW — one of mainland Australia's highest, coldest wine regions. The result: tight, citrus-driven Chardonnay with real mineral cut.
The fruit comes off blocks at 610 to 760 metres in the Snowy Mountains foothills at Tumbarumba, on deep weathered granite that drains hard and keeps yields low. That altitude puts this among the coolest vineyard sites on the Australian mainland.
The 2021-22 season stayed cool and wet, with no heat spike to rush the fruit through summer. Grapes came in at just over 12 Baumé with acid still above 10 grams a litre, high for Chardonnay. Whole bunches went straight to press, then fermented and aged in new and seasoned French oak from Allier and Vosges. Part of the batch went through malolactic and spent time on lees before blending and bottling in March 2023.
Give it a decant, or at least ten minutes in the glass, before it shows its hand. Grilled snapper or a plain roast chicken sit right alongside it.
Producer note
The Collector is a Canberra-based label working with cool-climate fruit from across southern NSW.
