About
Irancy is northern Burgundy's red appellation, near Chablis. Lighter, fresher, more transparent than Côte d'Or — and far cheaper. Real Burgundian Pinot.
Brothers Gabin and Félix Richoux make this wine, the eleventh generation of their family to grow vines in Irancy. They took over from their father Thierry, who built the domaine's modern reputation. The estate runs to 18 hectares, farmed organically since 2013.
The vineyards climb the slopes above the Yonne river valley, on limestone soils close to those of Chablis. Alongside the village wine, the brothers bottle two single-vineyard wines, Cailles and Veaupessiot.
This 2019 has several years of bottle age behind it, so the wine has had time to settle. Pour it with duck, roast chicken or mushrooms, and serve it slightly cool. It is the kind of bottle that starts a Burgundy habit.
