Far from the entry-level NZ Pinot stereotype. Concentrated, structured, properly serious. Marlborough Pinot at its best.
The fruit comes from one site, the Quarters Vineyard in the Brancott Valley. Its heavy clay loam and warm, narrow valley bring a richness the region's stony flats rarely manage. The vines are close-planted, more than 30 years old, and managed organically so the roots dig deep.
Will and Rachel Hoare run Novum as a two-person label. Will made wine at Cloudy Bay and Fromm before striking out alone. The 2023 season started with a wet La Niña spring, then turned dry from December. He destemmed everything, let wild yeast start the ferment, and left the wine on skins for more than 35 days. It then spent 12 months in French barriques, 20 percent new.
Give it a short decant and pour it with duck or mushroom dishes.
